LANCASTER
A vibrant University City, and a strategic outpost of political power for over a thousand years, the historic city of Lancaster successfully blends the old with contemporary cultural activity. Lancaster offers something for everybody throughout the year catering for all ages and interests. Within this historical Universit City you can enjoy its lively street markets and shopping centre,
and a good choice of restaurants, bars, and pubs. The Medieaval blueprint upon which the City evolved is reflected in the haphazard nature of the city centre streets, especially the cobbled streets that wind their way uphill to an imposing Lancaster Castle. Over the centuries Lancaster has retained many fine examples of Georgian architecture, whilst the Priory Church of St. Mary and the Edwardian Ashton Memorial are of architectural and historical importance. Lancaster offers several museums including Lancaster City Museum, Maritime Museum, and Judges’ Lodgings. A thriving arts
community, Lancaster holds festivals and events throughout the year. For live music there is the Jazz festival and Lancaster Music Festival. For live performance the Lancaster Grand and the Dukes Theatre are premier venues attracting big name performers. Throughout the summer months Lancaster’s ‘Play in the Park’ is a series of open-air performances set in the wonderfully landscaped grounds of Williamson Park, whilst Lancaster University’s Nuffield Theatre regularly attracts the big name comics, dance companies, and dramatic productions.
